Circumnavigate
Klasse Konrad,
Universität der Künste Berlin

With Circumnavigate, the Konrad Sculpture Class at Berlin University of the Arts is staging an exhibition at B-Part Exhibition am Gleisdreieck. The exhibition explores the relationship between artistic position, space, and group under the conditions of temporary architecture.

The B-Part—a modular, dismantlable wooden architecture in temporary urban use—serves not only as an exhibition venue, but also as an active frame of reference for the works on display. Its scale, tectonic presence, and transience shape the spatial settings and invite an examination of questions of temporary use, densification, and aesthetic interactions. The space is not understood as a neutral container, but as the starting point for a process of circling, reading, and negotiating.

The challenge of Circumnavigate was to exhibit with a large group in a comparatively small space. Instead of autonomous individual presentations, a joint spatial concept was developed that focuses on relationships, overlaps, and resonances. The title refers to a practice of circumventing and circling around—of navigating between spatial conditions, individual approaches, and collective form-finding.

Formal decisions were made in a collaborative process. The restriction to colorless or natural-colored works creates a visual restraint within which materiality, surface, scale, and spatial interventions gain significance. The works enter into an open dialogue with each other and with the architecture, without arranging themselves hierarchically.

Circumnavigate sees itself as a spatial experiment: How can collectivity be exhibited without leveling differences? Where do aesthetic and content-related condensations form? And how can an exhibition space be read as a jointly supported structure? The exhibition invites visitors to explore these questions as they move through the space.

The B-Part Exhibition space accompanies the future development of the Urbane Mitte Am Gleisdreieck with artistic autonomy and thus at the same time enters into a dialogue with the overarching themes of the overall project - forms of New Work, Co-working, Culture and Sport - and creates synergies between artistic, cultural and social approaches. The artistic director of the B-Part Exhibition is Rüdiger Lange (loop - raum für aktuelle kunst).
